10 Things : Pennsylvania

I have spent the past few days traveling and staying in different places across the state of Pennsylvania.  I also lived in the “City of Brotherly Love” for well over 6 years, so I think its fair to say that I am a self proclaimed Pennsylvania resident. PA is a big state, offering up two big cities : Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, but it is also a state full of historically rich, small towns. It’s a state that has a little something for everyone – four seasons, cities, an endless supply of fields + farms, mountains, waterfalls, hiking, rivers, and lakes galore.   Oh, and there are farmers markets EVERYWHERE.

It doesn’t matter where you go in PA, each place will be equally as different as the next.  It only took 10 reasons and one trip back to the “Keystone State” for me to totally fall back in love with Pennsylvania this week…

  1. The Omni Bedford Springs – this had to be the number one reason.  { see my previous post – Bedford Springs, PA to learn more } This resort is everything Pennsylvania is.  Its historic, its charming and most importantly, its huge!
  2. Small Towns.  I am truly a a city-dweller who likes her cities and who is never going to move out of one.  That being said, I find small towns to be positively charming, offering an array of shops, cafes, restaurants and streets that are rich with history.  Pennsylvania is like Small Town-ville, USA and I loved adventuring through a few.
  3. The fall leaves.  Part of me is sad typing this, because it means I am saying goodbye to summer time, boat drinks and sun-tans.  On the other hand, I do have the biggest grin at the thought of pumpkin flavored everything, cozy sweaters and of course, the falling leaves.  PA has definitely started to see the face of fall creep around the corner and its a beautiful thing.
  4. Coffee Shops – particuarly one we stopped at while we were staying in Bedford Springs, PA.  HeBrews Coffee Shop not only is cleverly named, but they serve up some amazing warm, caffeinated drinks.  From cappuccinos, lattes and mochas to tea – you cant go wrong here.  I got the Chai Tea Latte and I am still finding myself craving another.
  5. The Quaint Historic Town Centers.  Each small town has a main street, and each main street is lovely in its own way.  Lined with small cafes, interesting boutiques and a different story on how it all began – I love it all.  There is no better way to spend a day then getting lost along these cute little streets.
  6. Crêpes.  I had the most amazing Nutella and Chocolate Crêpe from Helena’s Cafe in Carlisle.  Warm, gooey, and full of Nutella paired with a Cappuccino.  I’m addicted.
  7. Sunflowers, endless fields of Sunflowers.  My absolute favorite flower, looking at them just makes me happy.  While riding through the countryside you will see horse farms, a LOT of corn, but if you are lucky you will come across a Sunflower patch or two.
  8. Ice Cream Shops.  I love ice cream in the summer.  I love ice cream year round.  Pennsylvania is full of little ice cream shops tucked away in the small towns across the state.  Most recently I stopped at Massey’s in Carlisle, PA and had one of their famous hand-dipped custards – Confetti Cake to be exact.  YUM!
  9. Farm to Table restaurants.  Pennsylvania is chocked full of farms so its no surprise the Farm to Table concept has really hit it off here.  Recently we had a meal at Horn O’Plenty { recapped further in my Bedford Springs, PA post }  There is nothing better than a fresh meal, with healthy home grown ingredients.  We had a delicious Summer Harvest Pizza and Mac + Cheese with the biggest Heirloom Tomato.  This restaurant in particular had a Fresh Market attached to it where you could purchase items from their local farm.  It was such a picturesque location and the food was almost too good to eat….Almost.
  10. Macaroons.  Why do girls love Macaroons so much?  They are pastel colored, French and come in unique flavorings. At least thats why I love them – plus they make for a perfect picture prop.  I took home a Rose and Lavender flavored macaroon from Helena’s Cafe.
