5 Easy East Coast Getaways

The warm season is officially approaching, filled with less motivation to work, more desire to adventure and of course, the ever so popular “Summer-Friday.”  With these factors slowly creeping into our daily conscious, it might be time to quench your adventurous self and put some awesome weekend getaways on your calendar this summer.

Being an East-Coast girl, I have pretty much narrowed down my Top Five Weekend Getaway spots that will be on my list for the summer.

  1.  Washington, DC : A little less than three hours from Philadelphia lies one of my favorite weekend getaways.  Our nations capital is rich in history, architecture, shopping, bars and wonderful restaurants.  Each time I go to DC I find something new, a new pocket of restaurants and shops or a completely new neighborhood – it is incredible.

Stay : Located conveniently on 14th Street {near all attractions, restaurants and shopping} The Mason and Rook Hotel is a part of the Boutique Hotel chain from Kimpton.  Sleek, Stylish, Perfectly located and the Hotel offers a complimentary Wine Hour every night from 5-6pm, you can’t go wrong when you stay here.

Eats : Ok lets quickly cover all three meals + one necessary dessert.

  1. Breakfast : A Baked Joint –  Be sure to get the Savory Oatmeal and a signature latte.
  2. Lunch : Cava Grill – I could eat here everyday of the week and I am constantly hoping/praying they will open a location in Philadelphia.  When it comes to Cava, think a Mediterranean version of Chipotle with an expansive juice bar WITH FREE REFILLS
  3. Dinner : Fig & Olive – Recently just opened its doors in the trendy new CityCenter community, this is a great option for Pasta, Cheese and of course, Great Wine.
  4. Dessert : Georgetown Cupcakes – This is a DC staple, need I say more?

To-Do : Walk the National Mall, see the Monuments, make a trip down to Georgetown, catch one of the cities Sporting Events at Nats Park or The Verizon Center.  The options for activities in DC are seemingly endless.

  2. Princeton, New Jersey : Only 45 minutes north of Philly and easily accessible from both directions of I-95 lies the quaint little town of Princeton.  Centered around the gorgeous, prestigious University – Princeton makes for a perfectly wonderful weekend trip.

Stay : Nassau Inn – located in the heart of Princeton on Nassau St is the Nassau Inn.  Charming, Quirky and Private are the best ways to describe this little gem.  Stay here and you will leave feeling more pampered and relaxed than ever.

Eats : Personally, Food is one of my favorite parts of ANY trip.  Let’s do a quick run-down of my top Princeton eats.

  1. BreakfastRojo’s Roastery – Step out of the Nassau Inn and across the street to Rojo’s.  This place is adorable.  Movies were made around places like this.  You are safe with any latte or scone from here.
  2. LunchPrinceton University Student Center – Every wished you could go back to college?  I know I do.  I love eating in the student centers or cafeterias on campus.  They usually have a great selection of chain restaurants or a buffet style cafeteria for AMAZING subsidized pricing.
  3. DinnerMediterra – Offers great indoor/outdoor seating, an incredible wine menu and some seriously good Mediterranean that mixes in a little extra emphasis to Italian and Spanish flavors.

To-Do : Walk the University grounds, { they are quite magnificent } Do a little

Stay : Loews Annapolis – I am a huge fan of the Loews chain.  I think when it comes to the service industry, they do it right.  Beautifully decorated, stunning water-views, great restaurant and bar options – this hotel is perfectly located for some real weekend fun.

Eats :  Being a Marylander, I am very partial to all of these restaurants and had a tough time narrowing down for y’all!

  1. Breakfast : Miss Shirleys – A great breakfast chain local to the Maryland area, I HIGHLY recommend the Born On The Bay-O Bloody Mary and the Broiled Grapefruit Brûlée.
  2. Lunch : Masons Lobster – If you are a seafood fan, this is your spot.  The most popular item?  The Famous Lobster Roll, but of course.
  3. Dinner : Sams on the Waterfront – Go at sunset.  Or go early and stay until sunset.  It is unreal how beautiful it is.  With an expansive drink menu and an item for everyone, Sam’s is always a home-run

To-Do : Take a tour of the GORGEOUS grounds of the Naval Academy.  Walk along the Marina and boat lined Harbour of Annapolis.  Pop into any of the adorable shops along Main Street.  Hop on a guided Skiff Tour of the Chesapeake, most of them allow wine on board!

4. New York, New York – Who doesn’t love a quick trip to the Big Apple?  The City that Never Sleeps?  I sure do.  Planes, trains and automobiles + some bus lines can get you here in the blink of an eye.  With plenty of hotels, restaurants and things to see, why not put NYC on your summer hit list?

Stay : The Plaza – There is no hotel thats as iconic and quintessential as the Plaza in NYC.  Countless movies, books, and love stories have all taken place in this fine establishment. Go on and treat yourself for a night or two and be apart of the history that is The Plaza.

Eats : With a city that currently has over 24,000 restaurants and a new one opening everyday – man this was a tough decision, dessert included on this trip.

  1. BreakfastBibble and Sip – Noted one of NYC most “Instagram-able”  locations, try one of B & S’s Matcha Green Tea Lattes and a Panna Cotta.
  2. LunchChelsea Market – It is near impossible to note just ONE place in NYC to get lunch so I am leaving the option to you.  Chelsea Market is one of my favorite places in NYC, with so many unique food and beverage options like custom grilled cheeses, Pan-Asian cuisine, a full oyster bar in the middle of all the action – this is the perfect place to pick your lunch faves.
  3. DinnerPanna II – You may have seen this place online or on Social Media, that place with all the crazy lights hanging from the ceiling?  Yes – that is Panna II.  Located on the LES this is the ABSOLUTE of all dinner places.  BYO, affordable Indian and an atmosphere you have never experienced before – Panna II is worth the trip to NYC alone.
  4. DessertBilly’s Bakery– Yes NYC may be known for killer Cheesecake and a little place called Sprinkles but Billy’s is the place to get a dessert when visiting NYC.  The Ice-Box cake is OUT OF THIS WORLD good.

To-Do : I mean its NYC, walk outside your door and there is something to do.  I personally love walking Central Park.  Fifth Avenue shopping can never be a wrong choice.  Explore South Street Seaport.  Any of the world class Museums like the MoMA or the Met.  You are on your own with this one, go adventure!

5. Bedford Springs, Bedford PA – Probably one of my favorite weekend getaways to date. Tucked in between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh is Bedford Springs.  A small mining town that boasts an expansive all inclusive resort.  Beautiful mountain views, a charming small main street and some good, home cooking is what you will find in Bedford, PA.

Stay : Omni Bedford Springs – I would argue this is one of my favorite hotels I have ever had the chance to stay in.  Elegant in every sense of the word, you can get lost exploring the massive grounds of the Omni.  The hotel brings the luxury of the Omni chain while keeping its historic charm.  With 5 restaurants, an acclaimed Golf Course, Pools, a Spa and several bars – the Omni has it all.

Eats : Since it is a small town, options are limited – but luckily the options you have are out of this world.

  1. Breakfast : ROOM SERVICE.  Take advantage of the Hotels huge, fluffy beds and get yourself some pancakes to eat in them.
  2. Lunch Horn O’ Plenty – Hands-down the best Farm to Table I have ever been too.  Each dish is truly made with love.  I suggest the homemade Mac and Cheese with the Heirloom Tomato and one of their homemade Pizza Pies.
  3. Dinner : 1796 Room – Stick to the hotel for some great dining options.  The 1796 room has a massive quality wine list and some serious premium cut meats.

To-Do : Relax at the Pool.  Check out the AMAZING spa.  Hike one of Bedfords many footpaths.  This is a total check out of reality place, so enjoy the R & R.
